A LearnMicrosoftBI user emailed me with the following request: "I need a template or a form that would be used by the business/users to define a KPI using all or most of the PPS capabilities/options."
I don't know of an existing document but I put together a quick list of the information I gather when creating KPIs (whether it's in PPS or an SSAS cube.) Any feedback on the list is appreciated.
- KPI Name
- KPI Objective
- Calculation (how is it calculated)
- Source for actual value
- Source for target/budget/planned value
- Desired indicator (stoplight, thumbs, smiley faces, etc.)
- Number of bands
- Band delineators (where should it go from green to yellow and yellow to red and vice versa?)
- Weight – this will be tough to know ahead of time, but get a feel for whether it is more or less important than other KPIs
- Trend calculation – the trend in PPS is simplistic; they may want a more comprehensive calculation
- KPI report definition – when clicking on a KPI, what should you bring up, if anything
